WHO IS AN AME?

A professional licensed engineer, who becomes one, after pursuing Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course, distinct from a traditional degree program, is specifically tailored for the aviation sector. This course focuses on the critical responsibility of ensuring that aircraft, often referred to as "metal birds," are maintained in an airworthy condition. Essentially, it involves the ongoing maintenance and readiness of these aircraft for safe flight operations.

In India, the authority responsible for issuing the necessary licenses is the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA). To obtain a license, an individual must first secure a Certificate of Recognition (C of R) from an approved Basic Maintenance Training Organization (BMTO). Following this, they must successfully pass all the examinations associated with either the Mechanical (B1) category or the Avionics (B2) category.

 

Once an individual has obtained the appropriate certification privileges, along with Type Ratings, and has successfully completed the relevant examinations and interviews, they will be authorized to sign a “Certificate of Release to Service” (CRS) for a specific type of aircraft. This certification is a significant endorsement on their license and is formally acknowledged by the organization they work for as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME).

It serves ensure that the aircraft is indeed airworthy, thereby safeguarding the well-being of pilots, cabin crew, and passengers as they travel to their desired destinations. It is important to note that both certifying staff and support staff possess similar qualifications. However, the appointment of an AME is solely at discretion of the respective organization's concerned authority, which is typically the Quality Manager, rather than being appointed by the DGCA. Currently, the course duration is set at two years for the 147 Basic Maintenance Training Organization (BMTO), which has been established to comply with and supersede the previously existing CAR Section 2 Series E Part VIII requirements. This ensures that the training provided meets the latest standards and expectations within the aviation industry.
