Eligibility & Qualification criteria for AME

Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME)

The basic educational qualifications for being eligible to enter the field are:

​a) The applicant must have passed 10+2 examination in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from a recognized board or university or its equivalent


b) An applicant for an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s licence shall be at least 18 years of age

​Diploma in engineering recognized by state technical education board where physics, chemistry and mathematics has been studied as subject, shall be considered as equivalent qualification. To prove the equivalence to 10+2, the applicant is required to submit a certificate from applicable board/University.


Aircraft Maintenance Engineering license are of five (5) categories

  1. Category A

  2. Category B1

  3. Category B2

  4. Category B3

  5. Category C


Further, Category A and B1 are subdivided into 4 categories:

  1. A1 and B1.1 – Aeroplane Turbine

  2. A2 and B1.2 – Aeroplane Piston

  3. A3 and B1.3 – Helicopter Turbine

  4. A4 and B1.4 – Helicopter Piston


They have their individual experience requirements,

  1. Category A, B1.2, B1.4 and B3 requires 3 years of experience

  2. Category B1.1, B2 and B1.3 requires 5 years of experience


Category C with respect to large aircraft, needs:

  1. Category B1.1, B2, B1.3 requires 3 years of experience

  2. Category B1.2, and B1.4 requires 5 years of experience


For initial or first time issue of license a recent 1 year of experience in field is needed and for subsequent addition of category and subcategories a minimum of 3 months experience is needed.
